Notes
- Buying a pump by its maximum head is the classic mistake. A pump advertised as "46 ft max head" delivers that at zero flow — it is the point where the pump is doing nothing. What you need is a pump whose curve passes through 30 gpm at 29 ft. Ask for the curve, find your point on it, and ignore the number on the box.
- Friction is a real part of the head and it is invisible. 50 ft of pipe plus fittings comes to about 75 ft equivalent, and at 30 gpm that costs 4 ft — 14% of the total here. Every elbow adds; a check valve adds several feet on its own.
- Five feet of residual head is not optional on a pressure field. Orifices only distribute evenly when there is pressure left at the far end. Size for lift alone and the near laterals take everything while the far ones stay dry — the same failure as an unlevel distribution box, arriving by a different route.
- Size the dose, not just the pump. A pressure-distributed field wants a dose of roughly four to ten times the volume held in the laterals, so the pipes fill and drain each cycle rather than trickling. That sets the float spacing and the tank's working depth, and it is the difference between a field that rests between doses and one that stays saturated.
- Fit the alarm and mean it. A high-water float and an audible alarm on a separate circuit from the pump is what turns a failed pump into an inconvenient week rather than sewage in the basement. On the same circuit, a tripped breaker silences both.
29 feet of total dynamic head
Lifting effluent 20 ft through 50 ft of pipe is not a 20 ft job. Head has three parts and only the first is obvious:
- 20 ft of static lift, from the pump-off level to the discharge
- 4 ft of friction, through 75 ft equivalent of 1½″ pipe at 30 GPM
- 5 ft of residual head, so the far orifices still have pressure to distribute with

Read the curve, not the box
A pump advertised with a large "maximum head" delivers that number at zero flow — the condition where it has stopped moving water. What matters is whether the curve passes through 30 GPM at 29 ft. Ask the supplier for the curve and find that point on it.
Fittings are most of the friction on a short run
Every elbow, the check valve, the union and the discharge assembly add equivalent feet. A 50 ft run measured on the tape behaves like 75 ft once they are counted, and on a short run the fittings can exceed the pipe.
Two things that are not optional
A high-water float on a separate circuit from the pump, with an audible alarm — on the same circuit, one tripped breaker silences both. And a dose volume of roughly four to ten times the lateral capacity, so the pipes fill and drain each cycle instead of trickling.
