• "Every three to five years" is one row of a table being quoted as if it were the whole table. It is roughly right for four people on a 1,000-gallon tank. For 3 people on 1,000 gallons the interval is 3.7 years, and the gap between those two numbers is thousands of dollars in either direction.
• Pumping early is money for nothing, but late is not a fair trade. The tank does not fail loudly. Solids simply start leaving with the effluent, and they clog the biomat in the drain field. By the time anything backs up, the field is the thing that needs replacing, and that costs many multiples of a pump-out.
• Have the tank measured, not guessed. A pumper can read sludge depth with a core sampler in a few minutes, and that reading beats any table including this one. Garbage disposals, a home office, a water softener discharging into the tank, and long guest stays all shift the interval — a disposal alone can halve it.
• Additives do not replace pumping. No product dissolves the inorganic fraction — grit, plastic, hair, lint — and that fraction is a good part of what accumulates. Some additives actively harm the system by suspending solids that should be settling, which sends them straight to the field.
• Keep the records. In many counties a pumping receipt is what proves the system was maintained when the house is sold, and a missing history turns into an inspection and often a replacement demand at the worst possible moment.
